How to Airbrush Stencil Designs onto Sneakers

1

Step 1: Prep the Surface

Goal: Remove dirt, oils, and factory finishes so your paint can properly bond.

  • Use Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer to remove the factory finish off of the leather. Make sure to use an applicator pad or cotton swab to gently rub and clean the areas of the leather shoe that you want to paint on.
  • If the shoe is a fabric material, you can skip out on these steps.
  • Print the vinyl stencil on a Cricut, Silhouette Cameo or vinyl plotter machine. Prepare it off to the side.

Step 2: Paint or Airbrush with 2-Thin

Goal: Make sure you have applied the vinyl stencil properly and that the vinyl is fully sticking without any edges or areas popping up. You can use a heat gun on low setting to press and lock the vinyl stencil in.

Step 3: Let Paint Dry

Patience is key! Allow each layer to dry fully before adding the next. This will help prevent any streaking or smudging and give you that buttery smooth finish.

Step 4: (OPTIONAL) Apply Finisher

***This step is optional***
Once your final coat is completely dry, seal the painted leather with Angelus 4-Coat or Acrylic Finisher. This step adds durability and protects your couch from wear and tear. Choose between matte, satin, or gloss depending on your desired finish.
