Devin Colley @DCGloves

I started customizing a little over a decade ago by painting sneakers - mainly Roshe Runs for myself and friends at school, but found interest in customizing baseball gear not long after. I started by just painting accents on gloves, and eventually got into dyeing them as well. I kept it going through college while still playing ball, and now I’m working toward releasing my first batch of custom baseball gloves!

How to Customize Baseball Gloves:

A Step-By-Step Guide

1

Prep the Surface

Use Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer with an applicator pad on all leather surfaces. This is critical for baseball gloves to remove factory oils and silicones. If the glove is used, ensure you've also used Angelus Easy Cleaner to remove any deep-seated dirt or grime.

Base Dye (Rit Dye Method)

To achieve that vibrant yellow base while mainting the natural leather grain and patina, use Rit Dye (follow the manufacturer's instructions for leather/synthetic blends if applicable). Dyeing the glove first allows the color to penetrate the leather, ensuring that even as the glove breaks in and creases, the yellow stays consistent. Let the glove dry completely before moving to the next step.

Paint The Details

Apply your Angelus Leather Paint in thin, even coats. For the blood spatter effect seen on @DCGloves' work, you can flick a loaded brush or handpaint for a controlled look.

If you're painting over plastic logos or rubberized sections, mix your paint 1:1 with Angelus 2-Hard to ensure it bonds to those non-flexible surfaces.

  • Pro Tip: If you're painting the web or palm, keep the coats extra thin to prevent cracking during gameplay.

Finishing Steps

To protect your masterpiece from the dirt and abrasion of the diamond, apply Angelus 4-Coat Urethane Finish to painted areas (optional). Apply 2-3 coats while the previous layer is still slightly tacky. This creates a professional-grade seal that is highly water and scuff-resistant.

Baseball/Softball equipment as well as everyday sneakers

1. Leather Dye - Very versatile when it comes to application and it soaks into the glove leather well

2. Red Vinyl Tape - It’s flexible, stretches and won’t tear easily. Helps with tucking in creases and rounding edges as well

3. Paintable Repair Filler - Good for filling in deep scuffs and empty stitch holes before painting

4. Angelus x Greg XGi5 Airbrush - I enjoy using mine with leather dye on gloves to get even coats and gradients

5. Angelus Leather Paint - Very durable paint, easy to mix custom colors and sometimes I will mix it with GAC-900 to change up the embroidery on baseball gloves
