My name is Tanner Monney. I am an artist based in Utah who has a passion for creativity, whether it's my own or someone else's. My creative journey started young, with me coloring my Legos and action figures. Over the years, I have explored many different mediums and techniques that have led me to specialize in creating customs and concept art. Music is the driving force of my creative process and presents a fun challenge in translating the emotions I feel while listening into my artwork. But most of all, I love creating art you can live in!

How to Paint and Customize Skateboard Decks Using Angelus Paints

1

Step 1: Prep the Surface

Start by lightly sanding the surface of the board with fine-grit sandpaper. This removes any factory coating and gives the paint something to grip. Wipe off the dust with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 2: Sketch Your Design

Use a pencil or light-colored sketching tool to outline your design. This gives you a clean roadmap before you start layering paint.

Step 3: Paint Base Layers

Apply your base coats using Angelus Leather Paints. Stick to thin, even layers and let each one dry fully before adding the next. This helps prevent cracking or buildup. Use high quality brushes to minimize brush strokes.

Step 4: Layer and Add Details

Once your base is solid, go in with smaller Detail Brushes to add detail, shading, and highlights. Build up the depth gradually for a clean, finished look.

Step 5: Finish It Off (Optional)

To protect your artwork from chips and scratches, apply one to three light coats of Angelus 4-Coat Finisher in your choice of finish (Matte, Satin, or Gloss). Let each coat dry before adding the next for a durable, professional seal.

Creator Questions

Orem, Utah, United States

During my senior year of high school in 2019, I was searching for a way to combine my love for sneakers and the joy I felt when creating art. While searching for ways to make this dream become a reality, I came across a video from DeJesus Custom Footwear who talked about why Angelus was the way to go! From there, the more I looked into paints for shoes, the more I kept seeing Angelus pop up. So I tried it out and I haven't looked back since!

While I started my custom journey painting shoes, I have since used Angelus paints for skateboard decks, weight belts, helmets, and even sword sheaths! Whenever I get to paint something, I know Angelus paints has me covered for all of my custom needs!

1. Mist paint is my go-to for a base layer on any custom as it covers well, is light enough to paint over, and works as a great neutral base for getting your mixed colors just right.
2. Easy Pour Twist Top Caps on the 4oz. bottles is an absolute game changer. No mess, just the right amount of paint, and no caps getting stuck on bottles!
3. Blue Turquoise is my most used product for when I am mixing paints as it allows me to get a wide range of colors.
4. 2-Thin is amazing as it allows you to thin down other Angelus paints so they can be used in an airbrush, which makes the possibilities for creativity endless.
5. Matte 4-Coat is the ultimate cherry on top for any custom. Not only does it give everything you've painted a smooth, even finish, but it even protects your work from scuffs and scrapes so you can wear them with peace of mind!

Art is a personal experience that is unique to you. Don't be afraid of putting yourself in your art!
