Isidore

My name is Isidore. I'm a French artist who paints the sneakers of pro basketball players, as well as basketballs, to transform them into works of art. My approach is guided by the search for harmony and aesthetics, through the choice of colors, their combinations, gradations and airbrush fades that follow the curves of the surfaces I paint.

How to Airbrush Gradients onto Fabric or Leather Sneakers

1

Step 1: Prep Your Shoes

Before you touch any paint, proper prep is key to ensuring your custom design sticks and stays.

For Leather Sneakers - What you need:

  • Start by cleaning the sneaker thoroughly with Angelus Leather Preparer and Deglazer to remove any factory finish, oils, or dirt. This ensures your paint adheres properly and your gradients stay crisp and durable.

For Fabric Sneakers - What you need:

  • Angelus Foam-Tex Cleaner Kit – gently removes dirt, grime, and oils from fabric.
  • Use Foam-Tex Cleaner and a brush to thoroughly clean the fabric. Wipe off excess moisture with a towel and let the shoes dry completely. Clean surfaces = better paint adhesion.

Pro Tip: Tape off any areas you don’t want painted using painter’s tape or masking film for clean edges.

Step 2: Mix & Thin Angelus Paints for Airbrushing

Angelus Paints are highly pigmented, so you’ll need to thin them down for airbrush use. Mix a 1:1 ratio of Angelus Paint to Angelus 2-Thin, or adjust slightly depending on your airbrush and desired flow. Stir well to avoid clogging.

Recommended Gear: A dual-action airbrush (like an Angelus x Grex XGi5 Airbrush).

Step 3: Build Up the Gradient in Layers

Begin with your lightest color first and apply in light, even coats, slowly building up opacity. Overlap slightly with the next color and use quick, controlled passes to softly blend where the colors meet. Work back and forth between colors to smooth the transition.

Pro Tip: Stay patient. Gradients are all about layering — not blasting one color over the next.

Step 4: Let It Dry & Seal It In

Once the gradient is complete and fully dry, seal your work with any Angelus 4-Coat Urethane Clear Coats or Acrylic Finishers to protect the design and give it a professional finish. Apply two to three light coats for best results.

Optional: Use a heat gun on low between layers to speed up dry time without cracking the paint.

Creator Questions

I'm based in France.

I heard about Angelus the very first time I wanted to learn how to customize my shoes. Angelus was recommended by all the artists and youtubers in the sneaker game. It was 7 years ago and today I still use Angelus paints for all of my artworks.

I use them for painting sneakers and basketballs, whether using an airbrush or paintbrushes. I also use Angelus products to prepare the material on which I'm going to paint.

Of course the Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer, which is a real game changer in terms of leather preparer. Also the 2-Thin which is mandatory for me as I work mainly with airbrushes. For the colors, my top is Prince Purple with its mystic metallic tints, Gift Box Blue that is sooo fresh, Copper that is lowkey underrated but a wonderful Angelus product. Honestly, I love so many Angelus colors that I you ask my top 3 tomorrow it will be a different answer.

Embrace every project as a learning experience! I have yet to work on a project where I didn’t mess up at some point. We don’t typically see that part of the process on social media, but I promise everyone around you is making mistakes behind the scenes. Keep saying yes to things, learn as you go, and reach out to your creative community for help or advice when you need it! Many artists share their process and learning experiences for free, so that is a great place to look for inspiration and guidance.
