Float like a butterfly with this tutorial on how to create custom shoes with a butterfly design. C.J. Martinez is showing Angelus Direct what paints, tools and techniques are needed.
First, gather the materials you'll need:
Butterfly stencil
Collector Edition Uni Blue Paint
Angelus Blue Paint
Angelus Black Paint
Angelus Paint Brush - #1 Angular Shader
Angelus Paint Brush - #2 Angular Shader
Angelus Micro Detail Paint Brush Set
Matte Acrylic Finisher
1. Prep
If you're customizing a pair of leather shoes use Angelus Leather Preparer and Deglazer to prepare the surface for painting.
2. Stencil
C.J. used an image of a butterfly he printed out to create his stencil. Place the stencil where you want your butterflies on the shoe and sketch on the outline with a pencil.
3. Blue Paint
C.J. choose Collector Edition Uni Blue Paint and Angelus Blue Paint for his butterflies, using the lighter Collector Edition Uni Blue Paint for the center and the Angelus Blue Paint for the edges. He uses the Angelus Paint Brush - #1 Angular Shader for painting the center in the lighter blue and Angelus Paint Brush - #2 Angular Shader for painting the darker blue on the edges. To blend the two colors he works from the inside lighter color to the darker color.
4. Outlining
To give the design a clean look he outlines the butterfly in Angelus Black Paint. To create such fine lines he used both a micro detail brush and a toothpick.
5. Apply the Finish
Once painting is done applying a Matte Acrylic Finisher helps protect your design.
