4-Step Guide: How to Paint on Denim with Angelus Leather Paint
Step 1: Prep the Denim Surface
Before painting, clean your denim with a lint roller and make sure it's completely dry and flat.
Pro Tip: Place a piece of cardboard or a cutting mat inside the jersey to keep the paint from bleeding through.
Make sure the denim's fabric is clean and dry before you begin.

Step 2: Sketch Your Design
Use a white fabric pencil or chalk to sketch your design directly onto the denim. Planning out your artwork first will help keep things clean and precise. If you’re new to freehand drawing, you can lightly trace using carbon paper or stencils.

Step 3: Apply Paint in Light Layers
To keep the paint flexible and prevent cracking, mix your favorite Angelus Leather Paint color with Angelus 2-Soft Fabric Medium at a 1:1 ratio. This combination allows the paint to bond with the fabric without becoming stiff.
- Mix Angelus 2-Soft Fabric Medium with Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint in a 1:1 ratio.
- Pro tip: For detailed work, try our Angelus Micro Detail Paint Brush Set for clean lines and intricate touches.
- Make sure to paint in light layers, and ensure that each layer has fully dried before applying the next layer.

Step 4: Heat Set Your Design for Durability
To lock in the flexibility and prevent cracking or peeling, you’ll need to heat set the paint.
What you need:
- Heat gun or household dryer (on high heat)
Instructions: After your final layer dries, use a heat gun or dryer to heat set the painted area for about 2–3 minutes. Keep the heat moving and avoid holding it too close.

Creator Questions
I'm based in the Netherlands.
A while ago, I visited a creative fair where I first came across Angelus Glitterlites. I’ve always been obsessed with anything that sparkles, so I bought it right away. Later, I decided to explore the brand further and discovered that Angelus offers an amazing range of colors. I ordered several shades and started my very first project customizing shoes. I loved working with the paint so much that I quickly ordered even more colors, and now I have almost the entire collection!
I mainly use Angelus for customizing bags and shoes, and I also like using it on clothing, from leather jackets to denim jeans. What I love most about Angelus is that being able to use it on so many materials makes the creative possibilities limitless.
I absolutely love the Glow-in-the-Dark Paint because it lets you create amazing effects and really make details stand out in the dark. The Angelus Paint Brushes are some of my favorites since they are very smooth and easy to use. The Glitterlites collection is another favorite because it adds extra sparkle to highlight details. I also like all the Acrylic Finishers because you can apply them with a brush or use them perfectly with an airbrush for a smooth even coat. On top of that I really appreciate the wide range of colors, there is always the perfect shade for any project I work on.
My biggest advice to aspiring artists and creatives is to just do a lot and not be afraid of making mistakes. Every mistake teaches you something valuable and if something goes wrong there is always a way to fix it which often makes your work even better and more beautiful than you originally planned. Most importantly create things that make you happy because that joy will shine through in everything you make.
