What Can You Use Paint Additives For?
Angelus Paint Additives are built to extend what one bottle of Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint can do. Here are the most common ways customizers, leather artists, and apparel painters put them to work:
Thinning Paint for Airbrush Spraying: 2-Thin Paint Thinner reduces viscosity, so Angelus paint flows cleanly through an airbrush without clogging or losing pigment density. It's essential for fades, gradients, and fine detail work on sneakers, jackets, and canvas.
Adding Body and Texture with a Thickener: 2-Thick Paint Thickener builds Angelus paint up to a heavier consistency, perfect for impasto strokes, palette knife work, and raised 3D effects on leather, canvas, and mixed-media art.
Painting Fabric Without Stiffening It: 2-Soft Fabric Medium and Golden GAC-900 keep paint soft and flexible on denim, cotton, canvas, and other fabrics, so painted garments and canvas sneakers stay comfortable and move naturally instead of feeling cardboard-stiff.
Painting Rigid Substrates: 2-Hard Film Hardener and Golden GAC-200 boost paint hardness and adhesion on rigid surfaces like wood, plastic, ceramic, and hardware, where flexibility isn't needed, and a tougher, more durable film is the priority.
Knocking Down Gloss for a Matte Finish: Duller reduces the natural sheen of Angelus paint, letting you turn glossy colors into flat matte tones without changing the color itself, ideal for tactical looks, leather restoration matching, and stealth-style customs.
Custom Sneaker Projects with Mixed Materials: One shoe often combines leather, mesh, suede, and rubber. Additives let you tune the same paint differently for each part, softer for the mesh tongue, harder for the midsole, without switching paint lines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Paint additives are mix-in solutions designed to change how acrylic paint behaves, its thickness, flow, flexibility, hardness, or sheen, without affecting color or adhesion. Angelus Brand Paint Additives include 2-Thin, 2-Thick, 2-Soft Fabric Medium, 2-Hard Film Hardener, Duller, and Golden GAC-900 and GAC-200, each formulated to give customizers precise control over how Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint applies and cures.
Angelus Paint Additives are formulated specifically for Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint and the full Angelus paint line, including Standard, Metallic & Pearlescent, Neon, Glitterlites, Collector Edition, and Walk On Paint. They're acrylic-compatible and generally work with other water-based acrylics as well, though best results, color accuracy, and durability are guaranteed when paired with Angelus paint.
Use Angelus Paint Additives in four steps: Choose: Match the additive to the result you want: 2-Thin for airbrush flow, 2-Thick for body and texture, 2-Soft or GAC-900 for fabric flex, 2-Hard or GAC-200 for hard surfaces, Duller for a matte finish. Mix: Add the additive directly into Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint. Start with small ratios, typically 10–25% additive, and stir thoroughly until fully blended. Test: Always test on a scrap piece of the same material before painting your final project. Adjust the ratio up or down to fine-tune the effect. Apply: Apply mixed paint with brush, sponge, or airbrush in thin, even coats. Let dry fully between coats, then seal with Angelus Acrylic Finisher or 4-Coat Urethane for protection. Over-mixing the additive can dilute the color and weaken adhesion, so start small and build up.
Most Angelus Paint Additives work best at a 10–25% ratio by volume, meaning roughly 1 part additive to 4–10 parts paint. 2-Thin can go higher for airbrush use (up to about 25–30%), while 2-Soft, 2-Hard, and Duller perform best in the 10–20% range. Always test the mix on scrap material first and adjust to taste based on the surface and the effect you want.
Yes, Angelus Paint Additives are acrylic-compatible and can be combined to achieve specific results. For example, you can mix 2-Soft Fabric Medium with Duller to get a flexible, matte finish on canvas sneakers, or blend 2-Thin with 2-Hard for a smooth airbrushed coat on plastic. Keep total additive content under about 30% of the paint volume and always test the blend on scrap before applying to your final project.
