Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer is a leather deglazer that strips the factory finish off leather so Angelus Paint and Dye can bond and soak in. It's the first step in almost every Angelus custom or restoration, from painting sneakers to dyeing boots.

Each bottle is 5 oz. We've made Angelus shoe care products since 1907.

Why you need it

Most leather comes with a shiny factory coating. Paint and dye can't grip through it, which leads to peeling and patchy color. Deglazing removes that coating so your work lasts.

How to use it

Wet a cotton ball or rag with Deglazer.
Rub it over the leather in 3 to 5 passes.
Keep going until the shiny finish is gone and the leather looks dull.
Let it dry for a few minutes before you paint or dye.

Common questions

Do I have to deglaze before painting leather?

Yes. Without deglazing, paint can peel and dye can't soak in evenly.

How do I know the leather is deglazed?

The shiny factory finish will be gone and the leather will look dull and slightly rough.

Can I use it on canvas shoes?

You don't need to. Canvas has no factory finish, so just clean it with Angelus Easy Cleaner before painting.

Easy to use. Very necessary to make thing work right. Even made mistake when painting sample area. This even helped clean that off to start over. More the enough for many other projects. Cleaned and deglazed my project with ease. Helps paint stick better so why not do it right with this product. Priced fairly and very useable other then just for this. This product did not work

This product did not remove the previous color from my leather shoes. A bit of the original pink color showed on the cloth that I used. But the product was unable to remove the original color on the leather. I did rub the product in thoroughly and used the Burgundy color, which I thought would be strong enough for pink.
