Angelus Rich Brown Paint is an acrylic leather paint in a deep, rich brown, for customizing and restoring sneakers, boots, bags, and other leather goods. It's water-based, stays flexible once dry, and covers in 3 to 5 thin coats on a properly prepped surface.

Choose 1 oz., 4 oz., pint, or quart. We've made Angelus products in Los Angeles since 1907.

Works on

  • Leather shoes, bags, and furniture
  • Canvas and denim (add Angelus 2-Soft for a softer feel)
  • Wood
  • Plastic and metal, mixed with Angelus 2-Hard

Before and after you paint

On leather, take off the factory finish first with 3 to 5 passes of Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer. When you're done, seal it with Angelus 4-Coat for protection and the sheen you want.

Pro-grade paint, made easy for first-timers

  • Angelus is the go-to paint for first-time customizers, and it's the same professional-grade paint fashion, footwear, and entertainment companies use to make costumes, exclusive pieces, and finished products. You get commercial-grade quality at everyday prices.
  • Thin coats go on smooth, and the color builds with each one.
  • Want to warm up first? Try a few strokes on the Angelus Leather Test Swatch, real leather with a smooth side and a suede side.
  • You can always adjust. Dried paint comes off with Deglazer, or you can simply paint over it, so you can keep going until you love it.
  • Free step-by-step tutorials on our YouTube channel and FAQs walk you through it. Not sure about a color? Check the Color Chart. Unused products can be returned within 30 days.

Common questions

Can I mix Rich Brown with other Angelus colors?

Yes. All Angelus paints mix together, so you can lighten, darken, or shift Rich Brown to match your project.

Can you airbrush Angelus Rich Brown Paint?

Yes. Use an airbrush with at least a 0.35mm nozzle, and thin the paint with Angelus 2-Thin if you need it to flow more easily.

How much paint do I need?

A 1 oz. bottle usually covers 2 to 3 pairs of shoes completely. For a leather chair, plan on about a pint to a quart, and for a full couch, a quart or two.

PAINTING LEATHER

1. Prepare leather surfaces using 3-5 passes of Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer using our applicators, cotton balls, or a rag. (acetone can also be used).

2. Wait for leather to dry a few minutes. When dry, wipe with microfiber cloth to remove any remaining dust particles.

3. Apply Angelus Paint with paint brush, airbrush (at least 0.35mm nozzle) or sponge. Apply 3-5 coats or until desired coverage has been reached. Less coats can be used for line work and detail work.

Make sure to leave to dry 15-30 minutes between layers.

4. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours before allowing paint to bend or flex. Be careful of flying lint or debris getting on the shoe to avoid imperfections. Longer curing time ensures better durability.

5. To add extra protection or customize the finish, apply Angelus 4-Coat Clear Coat in Flat, Satin, Glossy, or Matte. Use 1-2 layers for the best results. 1-2 layers on top.

PAINTING CANVAS/DENIM - SHOES, CLOTHING, AND MORE

1. Prep by cleaning the surface with a cleaning product like our Angelus Easy Cleaner Kit. It is necessary to get out all the oils and dirt that may be sitting in or on the canvas.

2. Make sure there is adequate dry time and that you wipe off and get all the cleaner out.

3. (Optional) If you want to make the paint soak in and not be as rubbery textured on canvas we suggest using our product 2-Soft mixed with our paint. You can paint Angelus paint directly on canvas without it but it just will feel more like a screen print then part of the shoe. When using 2-Soft you must heat set.

4. Paint with 3-5 light layers of Angelus Paint. Make sure to leave to dry 15-30 minutes between layers.

5. Leave to dry.

(Optional) No additional protection is really needed as the paint has soaked into the canvas. If you want to change the sheen to a matte or glossy look instead we do suggest our 4-Coat Clear Coat.

The color was perfect

I used the paint to change the color of my daughter’s jazz shoes to match her skin tone. The product was easy to mix with other colors and I ended up getting the perfect hue of brown. The paint even covered scuffs from wear and tear and gave the shoes a “like new” look!

Change shoe color and restored old shoes

Turned a black pair of shoes brown. Recolored where finish had been completely worn off another pair. Saved over $200 had I needed to buy new shoes just because finish was messed up and the color was wrong.

Great product

Bought these shoes at a thrift store but knew I wanted to change the colour. Looked through the paint catalogue and decided to buy the 4 OZ. rich brown with the no. 600 acrylic finisher. Followed the instructions and they turned out great. Probably only used about a capful of paint for these shoes so there is lots left over, retrospectively I would get the 1 OZ. for a small project like this.

Good product

These people know how to make colored dyes for more than just the artists who do shoes. I make leather earrings, bracelets, purses, wallets, belts, and more and I use both the alcohol and acrylic dyes to achieve what I want with the pieces I make...

Great product-extended the life of our leather furniture!

Color (Rich Brown) matched our leather furniture set very closely. We were able to re-coat some of the worn leather surface areas and it looked almost like new. Very easy to apply and has held up perfectly for the past few months. This was our trial run of the product. Worked far above my expectations. Definitely worth the money.

Angelus paint

I ordered several different colors of Angelus paint, being not sure what direction I wanted to go. The rich brown is exactly that, and I now prefer a more grayed brown, or taupe. In fact, the Taupe shade that I purchased has been used extensively to change the color of several pairs of black shoes. I have also mixed Taupe with black for a charcoal gray shade that I really like.

We used the product to

We used the product to paint patches of our couch where the leather had peeled away. It worked awesome and exactly matched the color of our couch! Now when people come over they have to really look in order to see where the couch has torn. The paint works beautifully as it is durable, blends well, and doesn't peel!

Really happy with my buy!

Really happy with my buy! I had to turn my black boots into a dark/chocolate brown hue, and was easily able to do it with this paint. The paint covered evenly and made it look really natural. Paint didn't crack at all and didn't stain skin and carpet badly.
