Custom by Sara | Sara Noomen

I'm Sara, an artist from the Netherlands. I make custom shoes, mainly focused on famous singers. I started painting three years ago because I wanted matching shoes for a Harry Styles concert. After trying to sell them, I found that many people were interested. Since then, I've been able to make a lot of people happy with customized shoes!

How to Paint Portraits on Leather Sneakers in 4 Steps

1

Step 1: Prep the Leather for Paint

Before any art goes down, your shoes need a blank, smooth canvas.

Step 2: Sketch Your Portrait Design

Once your surface is ready, start sketching your design directly onto the sneaker.

  • A pencil or fine-tip pen to lightly outline key facial features.
  • Pro tip: Focus on the figure outline and especially the eyes first. Nailing the expression helps anchor the whole portrait.

Step 4: Seal It In & Protect Your Art

Once dry, you’ll want your masterpiece to last...especially on wearable art.

Use: Angelus Acrylic Finisher or any of the Angelus 4-Coat either Matte, Satin, or High Gloss, depending on your desired finish.

Pro Tip: Apply two light coats with a soft brush or airbrush. Don’t rush! Let it cure for at least 24 hours before wear.

Creator Questions

I'm based in the Netherlands.

I discovered Angelus through TikTok and YouTube while researching good leather paint when I wanted to start customizing shoes. In several videos, artists mentioned that they really liked using Angelus paint. They turned out to be right, because I still use Angelus and love their products.

I use Angelus products for both cleaning and customizing the shoes. I especially love the detailed brushes to make the shoes as detailed as possible. I also love giving the shoes a slight shine by using a finisher.

I especially love the huge variety of Leather Paint colors from Angelus. The Micro Detail Brushes are super useful for getting the details just right. I also love the Easy Pour Twist Top Caps because they make pouring the paint so much easier. Two other favorites of mine are the Leather Preparer & Deglazer and the Matte Acrylic Finisher.

Don't let other people's opinions get to you. Keep practicing and experimenting. The most important thing is that you enjoy it yourself!
