Proper prep and application are key to vibrant, even color. Here is a straightforward process to get professional results. 

1. Prep the surface. For leather, clean and strip factory finishes with a leather preparer and deglazer. For suede, brush with a suede brush or clean with an easy cleaner. 

2. Protect surrounding areas. Use painter’s tape or cover nearby sections to avoid accidental dye transfer, especially on mixed-material items.

3. Apply the dye. Load a wool dauber or brush with dye. Apply thin, even coats, working into seams and edges. For suede, keep strokes light to avoid crushing the nap.

4. Build color gradually. Let each coat dry completely before adding another. This helps control shade depth and ensures even coverage.

5. Buff and remove excess. Once the final coat is dry, gently buff with a clean cloth to remove loose pigment.

6. Seal and protect. For leather, apply a finisher or conditioner to maintain softness and durability. For suede, finish with a water- and stain-repellent spray.

7. Let it cure before use. Allow your project to rest for at least 24 hours before handling or wearing.
