1. Prep the fabric. Gently wash your item in warm, soapy water to remove any finishes that might block the dye from absorbing properly. Remember to keep it damp throughout the process.

2. Prepare the dye bath. Fill a stainless-steel pot with approximately 3 gallons of water for every pound of fabric. Heat water to about 200 °F. Add one teaspoon of dish soap.

3. Mix the dye solution. Make sure to shake the Rit bottle well before pouring it into the hot water. Then, give it a good stir until the dye appears evenly mixed.

4. Soak your item. Add the wet item to the dye bath. Stir constantly for the first 10 minutes. Continue stirring every few minutes for up to 60 minutes, depending on fabric type. Nylon dyes faster than polyester.

5. Check the color. When wet, the fabric tends to look darker. Once you've reached the shade you like, feel free to remove it.

6. Set the color. For blends with natural fibers, try using Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative. Simply soak the fabric for about 20 minutes to help preserve the color's vibrancy and beauty.

7. Rinse and wash. Rinse the item in warm water, gradually switching to cooler water until clear. Then wash with warm water and mild detergent, and dry. This last step removes excess dye and sets the color.
