Paint vs. dye for fabric

Paint sits on the surface for bold, detailed designs on light or dark fabric. Rit fabric dye soaks all the way into the fibers for full color changes, tie-dye, and dip-dye, and leaves the fabric feeling the same as before.

How to paint fabric

  1. Pre-wash the fabric to remove sizing and residue.
  2. Lay it flat and protect your work surface.
  3. Mix Angelus Paint 1:1 with Angelus 2-Soft for a softer feel.
  4. Apply with brushes, stencils, or an airbrush.
  5. Let it dry completely.
  6. If you used 2-Soft, heat set it with a heat gun, keeping the heat moving so it doesn't scorch.

Special effects

Add shine with metallic and pearlescent paint, sparkle with Glitterlites, black light color with neon paint, or a glow with Green Glow. These work best on heavier fabrics like canvas and denim.

Washing painted fabric

Wash painted items inside out on a gentle cycle. Skip bleach and harsh detergents to keep the color bright.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to heat set fabric paint?

Only if you mixed the paint with 2-Soft. Then heat set it with a heat gun once it's dry. Angelus paint used straight doesn't need heat setting.

Will fabric paint come off in the wash?

Properly applied and heat set paint holds up to washing. Wash inside out on gentle and skip bleach.

What's the best fabric medium for Angelus paint?

Angelus 2-Soft. Mix it 1:1 with any Angelus color.

Can I paint canvas shoes?

Yes. Canvas takes Angelus paint well. Clean the shoes first, and mix in 2-Soft if you want the canvas to stay soft.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes. Orders of $49 or more ship free within the continental U.S.
