How to paint a denim jacket, step by step
Lay it flat and slide in cardboard
Button the jacket and lay it face down on a table. Slide a sheet of cardboard inside, behind the area you'll paint, so paint can't soak through to the front. If the jacket is brand new, wash it once without fabric softener first, since softener leaves a coating paint doesn't grip.
Clean off lint and tape your edges
Brush off dirt with a Premium Sneaker Cleaning Brush, then run a lint roller or a strip of masking tape over the area to pick up fuzz and dust. Tape off seams, buttons, patches, or any edge you want crisp. Press the tape down well so paint can't creep into the weave underneath.
Sketch your design
Lightly draw the design with a pencil or tailor's chalk. For lettering or logos, a stencil keeps everything even. Keep big designs on the back panel, where the fabric stays flat when you wear it.
Paint a white base coat
Dab on a thin coat of Angelus Flat White Paint inside your design, pushing it into the weave. Let it dry, then add a second coat until the blue no longer shows through. This base is what makes your colors look bright on denim. For a softer finish over a large area, mix the base 1:1 with 2-Soft (see below).

A Heat Gun on low dries each layer in a minute or two, so you can keep working without waiting.
Paint your colors in thin layers
Fill in your design with Angelus Paint, letting each layer dry before the next. Two or three thin coats beat one heavy one, which can feel stiff and crack where the jacket bends. Use paint straight from the bottle for linework and small details, since it gives cleaner edges than a 2-Soft mix.
Heat-set, dry, and protect
If you used 2-Soft anywhere, heat-set those areas with a Heat Gun at 300°F for 3 to 5 minutes. Let the whole jacket dry fully, peel any tape, then spray an even coat of Water & Stain Repellent over the painted areas. For extra protection on art that gets rubbed, you can brush a thin coat of Acrylic Finisher over the paint first.

Using 2-Soft for a softer feel
2-Soft is optional. Paint straight from the bottle works on denim and feels a lot like a screen print. If your design covers a big area, like the whole back panel, mixing the paint 1:1 with 2-Soft keeps the fabric soft and flexible. The one rule: anything with 2-Soft in it must be heat-set with a Heat Gun at 300°F for 3 to 5 minutes. Painting on black or dark wash denim
Dark denim needs a solid white base before any color goes on, or your colors will look dull and muddy. Plan on two or three thin coats of Angelus Flat White Paint, drying between each, until the area is evenly white. Then paint as usual. Bright and neon colors look especially good over a clean white base on black denim.
Washing and caring for a painted jacket
Give the paint a few days before the first wash. Turn the jacket inside out, wash it on cold and gentle, and hang it to dry, since high dryer heat is hard on paint. Mistakes that ruin a painted jacket
- Painting without cardboard inside. Paint bleeds through and stains the front panel.
- Washing new denim with fabric softener right before painting. It leaves a coating that keeps paint from gripping the threads.
- Skipping the white base. Colors soak in, turn dull, and the blue shows through.
- Mixing in 2-Soft and skipping the heat-set. 2-Soft needs heat to set, so those areas won't hold up.
- One thick coat. It sits on top as a stiff crust and cracks at the elbows and seams.
- Hot washes and high dryer heat. Wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry.
