• Volume & Coverage: Choose the right size to cover anything from a small chair to a full couch. A 3 oz. bottle handles smaller jobs, while larger furniture may require multiple bottles. Standard Leather Dye also comes in pint & quart.

• Drying Time: Alcohol-based dye dries quickly, often within 10 minutes per coat. Low VOC Leather Dye takes a bit longer but offers a gentler process with fewer fumes. Both fully cure in about 24 hours.

• Compatible Surfaces: Our dye is best-suited for smooth leather. For damage repair, use leather filler before dyeing to smooth out scratches.

Dyeing a leather couch or chair is straightforward and easy. Here’s a brief step-by-step guide to ensure your leather furniture dye project goes smoothly from start to finish:

Prepare the Surface

Begin by cleaning with a damp, clean cloth, and then use our Leather Preparer and Deglazer to remove oils, waxes, and old finishes. This prep step is crucial because it ensures the dye bonds effectively to the surface.

NOTE: If your furniture has a few bits of grime, you may be able to tackle it with our Easy Cleaner.

Apply Thin Coats

Use a wool dauber, sponge, or All Purpose Applicator pads. Shake the bottle well before use, then apply a thin first coat. Give each layer time to dry properly before applying the next. Building color gradually helps you avoid streaking.

Build Up Color

Apply multiple coats until you achieve your desired color change. For edges or tight spots, use Dye Pen Applicators for a precise and clean job.

Final Coat & Buffing

Once the final coat is dry, gently wipe the surface with a clean cloth to remove any residue. This prevents dye transfer to clothes and helps the color cure more evenly.

Working with leather furniture dye is straightforward, but remember to handle it safely to protect both you and your workspace. To begin, always set up in a well-ventilated area to keep fresh air moving.

However, if you’re working indoors or prefer a dye with fewer fumes, grab some of our low-VOC leather dye.

In addition to ventilation, wear gloves and safety glasses. At the same time, be sure to protect nearby surfaces by covering them with plastic sheeting or foam pads.

Once your project is complete, wipe your tools clean with a damp cloth and properly dispose of any used applicators. 

Rather than pouring leftover dye or cleaning solutions down the drain, follow your local hazardous waste disposal guidelines.
