Seeing color right
Why the same color looks different in different light
Every paint swatch above was painted on real leather and photographed twice, once in daylight and once in warm indoor light. Use the Daylight and Warm light switch at the top of the chart to compare.
Daylight, 5600K
Cool, neutral light, like outdoors on a clear day or a photo taken with your phone.
- Closest to how your colors look outside and in photos you post.
- Whites stay crisp and blues stay blue.
Warm indoor light, 3200K
Yellow light, like a lamp at home or a cozy shop.
- Whites and greys look creamier.
- Reds, oranges and browns look richer; blues and purples look darker.
Screens show color a little differently too, so if a shade has to be exact, check it in the light where it will be seen most.
Pick the right line
Paint, dye, fabric dye or polish?
Start with what you're coloring and how you want it to look. Each card filters the chart to that line.
Paint
Sits on top of the surface and covers it, so you can go lighter or brighter than what you start with.
- Leather, vinyl and canvas
- Custom sneakers, bags and jackets
Leather & suede dye
Soaks into the leather and keeps its natural feel. Dye goes darker, not lighter.
- Smooth leather, suede and nubuck
- Boots, belts, bags and furniture
Fabric dye
Rit dyes color fabric all the way through, in the washer, the sink or a bucket.
- All-Purpose for natural fibers like cotton
- DyeMore for synthetics like polyester
Shoe polish
Wax polish that cleans, shines and restores color on smooth leather.
- Dress shoes and boots
- Any smooth leather
Color numbers
How to read an Angelus color number
Every bottle's SKU tells you the product line, the size and the color.
Product lines
- 720 Standard paint, 725 Neon, 732 Metallic, 733 Pearlescent
- 727 Collector Edition, 730 Glitterlites, 721 Glow in the Dark

- Many colors keep their number across lines: Brown is 014 and Navy Blue is 042 in paint, leather dye, suede dye and wax polish.
Custom shades
Angelus color mixing guide
Can't find the exact shade? Start from the closest color on this chart, then mix. A few habits make custom colors easy to repeat.
Mix like with like
- Mix paint with paint and dye with dye from the same line.
- Start with the color closest to your target, then nudge it.
- Add white to lighten and a darker shade to deepen. Black overpowers fast, so add it a drop at a time.
Make it repeatable
- Write down drops or parts of each color as you go.
- Mix enough for the whole project so every coat matches.
- Test on a scrap or a hidden spot and let it dry before you judge the color.
Questions
Angelus color chart questions
How many colors does Angelus make?
This chart shows 311 colors: 84 standard leather paints, 12 neons, 5 metallics, 7 pearlescents, 26 Collector Edition colors, 20 Glitterlites, 39 leather dyes, 20 Low VOC dyes, 25 suede dyes and 15 shoe wax polishes, plus 39 Rit All-Purpose and 16 Rit DyeMore colors.
What colors does Angelus leather paint come in?
Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint comes in 84 standard colors, from Flat White and Bone to Navy Blue and Black, plus neon, metallic, pearlescent, Collector Edition, Glitterlites and glow-in-the-dark lines. Every paint swatch on this page is real painted leather shown in daylight and warm light.
How many Rit dye colors are there?
We carry 39 Rit All-Purpose Dye colors and 16 Rit DyeMore colors. All-Purpose is for natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk and wool. DyeMore is made for synthetics like polyester, acrylic and nylon blends.
What colors does Angelus leather dye come in?
Angelus Leather Dye comes in 39 colors, Low VOC Leather Dye in 20 and Suede Dye in 25. Many share a color number across lines: Brown is 014 and Navy Blue is 042.
Why doesn't my dyed leather match the swatch?
Leather dye swatches are dyed on natural veg tan leather. Dye mixes with the color already in your leather or suede, so the result shifts with its starting color and undertone: red dye on white leather turns pink, for example. Test on a hidden spot first.
Which Angelus paint matches my Jordans?
The Collector Edition line is color-matched to popular sneakers. For example, Military Blue matches the midsoles of the 2012 Jordan 4 "Military", White Cement matches the light grey of the 2012 Jordan 4 "White Cement", and Infrared matches the 2000 Jordan 6 "Infrared". The Collector Edition section lists every match.
Is there an Angelus color mixing chart?
Use this chart as your starting point: tap any color to see its closest shades, then mix paint with paint or dye with dye. Lighten with white, deepen with a darker shade, add black a drop at a time, and write down your ratio so you can repeat it.
What colors does Angelus shoe wax polish come in?
Angelus Perfect Stain Shoe Wax Polish comes in 15 colors, including Black, Brown, Dark Brown, Cordovan, Mahogany, Red/Oxblood, Navy Blue, Grey, Tan, White and Neutral.
Do Glitterlites need a base coat?
Stir well before applying. A base coat of a similar paint color is advised, then apply Glitterlites in layers like acrylic paint and let them dry.
What is Neutral leather dye for?
Neutral has no color. It's used to dilute other dye colors so you can make them lighter.
How do I read an Angelus color number?
The color number is the last part of the SKU. In 720-01-180, 720 is the product line (standard paint), 01 is the size (1 oz) and 180 is the color.
Why does a color look different on my screen?
Screens and lighting both change how color looks. Every paint swatch here is real painted leather photographed in daylight (5600K) and warm indoor light (3200K), so you can see both. For an exact match, test on a scrap first.
What's the difference between leather paint and leather dye?
Paint sits on top and covers, so it can go lighter or brighter than the leather. Dye soaks in and keeps the leather's natural feel, but it only goes the same shade or darker.
Which dye should I use on suede?
Use Angelus Suede Dye for suede and nubuck. Leather Dye is for smooth leather.
Which Angelus leather dye can ship internationally?
Low VOC Leather Dye is non-flammable and able to ship worldwide.
